Studio Ho-Tong, a research-based architecture and design practice, and Hyrax Fabrication, a multi-material workshop focused on limited production runs and specialised projects, collaborated on the making of a yellowwood stool.
We were in search of a stool constructed entirely with interlocking timber joints. Each of the rectangular verticals slide into cut channels in the circular seat towards a central meeting point of three formed edges.
The assembly of parts is locked together at its base using a second, smaller circle. Many cuts, directions, angles, jigs, tools and hours are required to eventually form one yellowwood stool. A slow chair.
In 2022, the yellowwood stool was exhibited as part of the inaugural Cape Town Furniture Focus Showcase 1.
